Different Styles of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practiced in the United States

Your practitioner may either be a zang-fu practitioner, a five element practitioner, a Japanese style acupuncturist, or a mixture of all.  Five element practitioners often deal with psycho-emotional disorders.  They use an ancient Chinese medical model of fire, earth, metal, water and wood and how those elements relate to each other in your body.  Zang-fu, sometimes regarded as yin/yang acupuncture, is the style of TCM that is the most common in modern-day China, and is the style most U.S. Chinese medical schools teach.  Japanese style acupuncture uses very tiny needles that are inserted at very shallow depths.  Japanese style practitioners also use a lot of moxa, in particular rice grain moxa. Often, they do not leave the room during the treatment.  They may also do hara, which is a type of abdominal diagnostic tool and abdominal massage.
