Motor Point Needling

This technique utilizes motor points, which are the most electrically excitable part of the muscle.  This is where the nerve innervates the muscle.  When a muscle is in spasm, it has lost its ability to fire properly.  Correct insertion in the muscle will promote it to “jump” which is the resetting of the muscle to normal function.  Similarly, when a muscle is in flaccid state, it has also lost its ability to fire properly.  By stimulating the motor point, the flaccid muscle can return to a functional state.

Many motor points are also acupuncture points.  Often they are points in the belly of a muscle.  Motor points are not trigger points.  Trigger points are tender points in the muscle that most people refer to as “knots”.  They can refer pain to other parts of the body.
