Digestive Disorders

In Traditional Chinese medicine, the Earth element comprises the spleen and stomach, which are responsible for digestion.  Proper digestion and assimilation is at the root of good health.  Psycho-emotionally, the earth element is our center.  This is because it both physically resides in the center of our bodies, and from this location tends to ground us emotionally.  Everyone can relate to feeling “off” when they are having indigestion or a chronic digestive disorder.  There are various mechanisms for the earth element to become out of balance, and this can range from improper eating habits like eating late at night, eating foods that have no value or nutrition like fast food, and eating while worried or stressed.  In other words, eating “on the go” will actually weaken your digestion, which will in turn weaken your immune system.

In Chinese medicine the organs are paired with other organs.  The large intestine’s paired organ is the lung.  Often people with disorders of the bowel have skin conditions to match- like excema or psoriasis.  In Chinese medicine this is nicely explained by the lung-large intestine paired relationship.  The skin is the largest organ of excretion, so rashes and some skin conditions may be a way for the body to excrete something that can not be excreted via normal pathways.
