Constipation

Constipation is a common problem for both young and old people in this society.  Constipation in the elderly is usually a result of the declining of yin fluids, or moisture, in the body. One method of promoting bowel movements in an elderly person is to use moistening techniques, including various herbal formulas and substances such as flax or fish oil.

Constipation amongst young women (ages 25-35) is also quite common.  One reason for this is the abuse of laxatives, including such herbs as Senna and Cascara Sagrada. These herbs act as an irritant to the large intestine, which can lead to dependence on them, and eventually the loss of bowel muscular tonicity.

Post-partum constipation is a result of the loss of yin and blood fluids.  Formulas used to moisten and build blood are usually employed, with mindfulness of what herbs are safe for the baby while the mother is breastfeeding.

As with any TCM diagnosis, treatment is dependent on what type of constipation is present, and the acupuncture point protocol and herbal remedy are catered to the diagnosis.
