Addiction
In 1985, following ten years of experience developing the basic five ear-points NADA protocol for treatment of addiction, the staff and other professionals associated with the South Bronx's Lincoln Hospital determined a need for a national-level organization to expand training capacity and awareness of the value of acupuncture as a tool of recovery. The National Acupuncture Detoxification Association was then established. The protocol consists of five points in the ear which many people have found to be effective in helping to quit smoking and other forms of addiction. Some suggest, however, that one of the strengths of the NADA protocol is the fact that the sessions are given in a group setting, so there is a feeling of uniting with others not present in a normal acupuncture session (http://www.acudetox.com/faq.htm). As with any form of addiction, a plethora of psychological components cause the person to participate in their addictive behavior. A combination of therapies seems to be the most effective treatment for addiction rather than one single therapy.
